PDP chair: Jonathan, govs choose Mu’azu



A  former Governor of Bauchi State, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, has been chosen as the new Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party by President Goodluck Jonathan and governors.
He will replace the former chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who resigned from his position on Wednesday. Mu’azu was picked as a consensus candidate at a meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the governors of the party at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday night. The meeting ended at 1:22 am on Monday (today) morning.

EU import from Nigeria hits 33bn Euros

ABUJA — Nigeria in 2012 recorded a trade surplus of 33 billion Euros with the European Union, EU, in overall trade volume of 44.4 billion Euros.

Similarly, out-going Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, Deng Boqing, said weekend that the trade volume between Nigeria and China was $13 billion in 2013.

This week, we will closely examine the inference of the sum of $8.9bn (about N1.4tn) that NNPC confirmed it legitimately retained as fuel subsidy between January 2012 and July 2013!  SUBSIDY-EXPRESSWe recall that the National Assembly approved “an additional sum of N161.6bn to augment the initial N881bn voted for subsidy in 2012; thus, total fuel subsidy approved for 2012 was presumed to be about N1.05tn (i.e. more than 20% of the total budgeted expenditure of N4.7tn) for that year.”

Saharareporters has learned of the arrest of all the perpetrators of a bestial torture and sodomy of three women in Ejigbo which happened February last year.  The arrest of the sodomy gang, Saharareporters was reliably informed, happened at the palace of Oba Moruf Adisa Ojoola of Ejigbo earlier today.

The arrest was possible due to immense pressure on  Oba Moruf himself, he reportedly got all the men assembled at his palace around 11pm Saturday night. The gathering of the gang by Oba Moruf followed a closure of the market yesterday, which prevented the market men and women from carrying out their trading activities until the perpetrators were identified and brought to book.

Anti-gay law: Canadian Govt cancels President Jonathan’s state visit





A state visit being planned by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to Canada for February has been canceled by the Canadian Government.  The cancellation happened in the same week it was revealed the President secretly signed a controversial law banning gays, lesbians, and sexual minorities in Nigeria. Sources in Abuja told Saharareporters that the Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, Ojo Madueke, was told to inform President Jonathan that the state visit to Canada scheduled for February 13 and 14th 2014 has now been canceled.

The mother of a little girl who was beaten black and blue by an 'out-of-control' two-year-old at nursery has called for the child's expulsion. Katie Ann Guttridge, aged three, sustained a bruised eye socket, scratches and three bite marks when she was attacked by her classmate during playtime at Ratby Pre-School Nursery in Leicester. The little girl's mother, Clara Mackow, said her daughter was almost blinded in the attack and that her injuries were so bad that she was taken to hospital with a suspected broken eye socket.

Suspected trans-border car snatcher, Hamani Tidjani, has died after 10 years in prison custody, PREMIUM TIMES has confirmed.

Mr. Tidjani, who was arrested by the police for allegedly masterminding a car snatching syndicate across the Nigeria-Benin Republic border, breathed his last at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

The spokesperson of the Lagos Command of the Nigerian Prisons Service, Biyi Jeje, told PREMIUM TIMES Mr. Tidjani had been suffering partial stroke over the past nine months.

Russian officials visit Guantanamo, call the prison “black page in the history of the US”



WASHINGTON (VR) –  After years of negotiations, high ranking representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry and the General Prosecutor's office were allowed to visit Guantanamo prison.
The purpose of the visit of the delegation led by Foreign Ministry's Commissioner for Human Rights, Konstantin Dolgov, was to meet with the Russian citizen Ravil Mingazov held at the prison and insure his release in the shortest possible time. After a press conference held at the Russian Embassy upon return to Washington, Mr. Dolgov gave an exclusive comment to Radio VR:

Ganaian journalist and main presenter of the BBC World dies at 41



Ganaian journalist and main presenter of the BBC World News programme Focus on Africa, Komla Dumor has passed away. The TV anchor reportedly passed away at his home in London today Jan. 18th. He was 41.  Dumor joined the BBC as a radio broadcaster in 2007 after a decade of journalism in Ghana. From then until 2009 he hosted Network Africa for BBC World Service radio, before joining The World Today programme. In 2009 Komla Dumor became the first host of Africa Business Report on BBC World News. May his soul rest in peace...Ase !.
