Maiduguri youths march against Boko Haram




Thousands of youths on Thursday thronged the streets of Maiduguri   protesting   against the increasing spate of attacks on Borno State by Boko Haram.
The youths, who first assembled at the popularly Ramat Square Ground, later moved to the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar   Elkanemi, saying they were willing to confront the terror group if given the go ahead.

I’ve given Igbo positions they’ve never had – Pres.Jonathan





President Goodluck Jonathan has applauded the attention his administration is giving the Igbo, whom he said, are well represented in his government and are being appointed to positions which no previous administrations ever gave them.

The President also said the Igbo had also benefited from many projects completed by his government in the South-East.

He said these during this year’s World Igbo Congress Day in Huston, United States of America.

Delta dismisses herbalists’ cure claim





Delta State Government has dismissed claims by some traditional medicine practitioners in the state that they could cure the Ebola Virus Disease.

In a press release by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chike Ogeah, on Thursday, the state government said, “The claims are completely false, untenable, dangerous and represent a threat to public health.

“It is hereby restated that there is no known cure yet for the Ebola Virus Disease. The media, especially television and radio broadcast houses, should refrain from promoting any claim of cure for EVD by any unorthodox medical practitioner.

Ondo opts for cremation





THE Ondo State Executive Council has sent a bill to the state House of Assembly for the disposal of bodies by cremation. The state Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, said in Akure, the state capital, on Thursday that the bill was part of government’s efforts to prevent the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease in the state. He said the bill was necessitated by the need for a law to provide for the disposal of bodies by cremation of persons who died of contagious diseases, in order to prevent the spread of such diseases. He said the law would also be applicable to others who might wish to be cremated. Akinmade said the bill was aimed at empowering the Commissioner for Health to establish or permit the establishment of such number of crematoriums as might be required in the state for the disposal of human remains by burning.

Tanker crushes two army officers in Abia




A tanker carrying diesel on Thursday crushed two army officers at the Leru junction, Umunneochi council of Abia State on the Enugu- Port Harcourt Expressway. Eyewitnesses said the deceased were at a road block when the tragedy occurred. The driver of the tanker was said to have also lost his live in the auto crash as the tanker reportedly caught fire after the accident. According to an eyewitness account, the tanker driver apparently lost control and the vehicle started hitting the drums used as barricade on the road and eventually plunged into the median of the highway.

Remains of Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh to be buried September 12th




 The remains of late Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh, the phenomenal doctor who died on August 19th after being infected with the Ebola virus by Liberian Sawyer, will be buried on Friday September 12 at a private family funeral.


A memorial service will hold at the Holy Cross Cathedral opposite the City Mall in Lagos by 10am before her ash, which has been obtained by her family, will be committed to mother earth.

Her family had obtained her ashes after her corpse was decontaminated and cremated by the Lagos State Government. Continue...

Ebola: 400 under surveillance in Rivers, says NCDC director





The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Project Director, Dr. Abdulsalami Nasidi, has said that the health ministry is monitoring about 400 people in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for signs of Ebola after they came in contact with a Port Harcourt doctor who died of the disease but hid the fact that he had been exposed.

Nasidi said this on Thursday in Geneva, saying that there is a sense of “hopelessness” due to the lack of proven drugs or vaccines to treat Ebola that has infected 18 people in the country.

A 31 year old Nigerian man, Adio Opeyemi Micheal (pictured above) has been arrested by the EFCC for duping a 75 year old dutch woman of €200,000 in an internet romance scam. Find the EFCC press statement below...


"For swindling a 75 year old woman of 200,000 Euros in a romance scam, a 31-year-old confidence trickster, Adio Opeyemi Michael, an indigene of  Owu LGA of Ogun state, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC. Major Chinese Investment Fund Interested in Russia's Yakutia





Russia’s Sakha (Yakutia) Republic Investment Development Agency and Chinese investment fund Yuntszin have signed a memorandum of understanding for the joint development of investment projects and the creation of a bank and a fund, the agency’s website said.

“The company’s representatives have already visited southern Yakutia and held a number of meetings in Yakutsk. The outcome of the business trip was signing the memorandum, containing specific measures on cooperation development – the creation of a working group to develop the investment project, a common bank and a common fund,” the statement published Wednesday said.

Joan Rivers Dies



Joan Rivers sadly passed away earlier today (September 4) and her daughter Melissa just released a statement regarding her death.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,” Melissa said (via People). “She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother. Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon,” Melissa added.

Party asks court to stop pro-Jonathan rallies





The Hope Democratic Party has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to stop the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria from further holding rallies for President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term bid.

The party, through its suit filed on Wednesday, argued that the rallies were violating provisions of the constitution.

The defendants in the suit are President Jonathan, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Peoples Democratic Party and the Inspector General of Police.

Jonathan’s town boils as youths protest varsity admission quota





President Goodluck Jonathan’s hometown, Otuoke, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was on Thursday thrown into chaos.  Aggrieved youths from the President’s community protested the alleged refusal of the Federal University, Otuoke, to employ and give out admission slots to indigenes of the community.

The protesting youths barricaded the entrance to the university.

The protest, which started at about 8am lasted many hours, leading to the closure of the entrance into temporary sites of the institution and the disruption of examinations for pioneer students and the 200-level students of the institution.....

Court freezes Dangote’s accounts in 20 banks





No, not Aliko Dangote but his younger brother, Sani Dangote. According to reports, a Federal High Court in Lagos today September 4th ordered 20 Commercial banks in Nigeria to dishonour all withdrawal cheques from Sani Dangote and his companies, Dansa Foods Limited and Bulk Pack Services Limited until September 11th.

According to Punch, the high court judge, Justice Okon Abang, gave the order while presiding over a case brought against Dangote by Union Bank. Union Bank had dragged him and his companies to court over alleged refusal to pay up the N5.2bn loan granted his company since September, 2008.

Obasanjo Appointed First Chancellor Of Jigawa State University



Ex-President Obasanjo has made history following his appointment as the first Chancellor of the Jigawa State University Nigeria's former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has been appointed the Chancellor of the newly established Jigawa State University. According to a press release from the office of state's Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Haruna Wakili, Obasanjo's appointment as the first chancellor of the university was approved by the state governor Sule Lamido. Lamido had also sent a formal letter to the former president.

China to Replace Google, Microsoft With Homegrown OS





China has announced it would present its own new operating system in October, 2014, Reuters reports.
"After concerns about US surveillance and a monopoly probe of Microsoft, there is some good news for China's homegrown operating system (OS): a desktop version may be ready in October," wrote Xinhua on August, 24.
As tensions between the US and China grows over cyber security issues, Beijing is seeking a way to become independent of imported systems like Microsoft's Windows and Google's Android. The new operating system is expected to first appear on desktops and later to be adapted for smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

Russian Envoy: European Concerns About Russia’s Alleged Destabilizing Ukraine ‘Baseless’




The concerns of Eastern European countries about their security and Russia’s alleged destabilization of the situation in Ukraine are baseless, as such an attitude has more to do with phobias then with real security concerns, Russia’s Permanent Representative to NATO Alexander Grushko said in an interview with Euronews.


“These worries are completely baseless. We have proven many times that all these so called facts produced by NATO and other European capitals are not really facts, but fabricated documents. We are not concentrating troops, neither movement of military hardware which could be considered as destabilizing,” Grushko said.

Rivers govt contradict health minister. Says PH woman died of cardiac arrest not Ebola




The Rivers state government has contradicted yesterday's report by the Health Minister who said an aged woman died from the Ebola Virus Disease on Tuesday September 2nd in Port Harcourt.
 
At a media briefing today in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state Commissioner for Health, Dr Samson Parker said older woman died of cardiac arrest and not Ebola as previously mentioned by the Minister of Health through his media spokesperson, Dan Nwomeh. Continue...

Gov Amosun Denies Knowledge Of Arrested Facebook Detainee




TheNation had yesterday reported that one Wasiu Ogunnoiki, 31, was arraigned 2 days ago, September 2, in Magistrate's Court 1 in Sagamu, allegedly for "engaging in acts capable of denting the image" of Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun on his personal Facebook account. Wasiu, who is said to be a motorcycle driver, had reportedly pleaded not guilty, was granted bail at N400,000, but remained in custody. His case was adjourned until December 5th.

Ebola: FG to Review Resumption Date For Schools





The Federal government has decided that the earlier extension of resumption date for primary and secondary schools to the 13th October be reviewed to the middle of September.

Addressing state House correspondents after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting, the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu said the decision to review the extension of resumption date was based on the recommendation of a body of experts set up by government to look at the extension of resumption dates for primary and secondary schools. According to the Minister, the Minister of Education was directed by council to convene an emergency meeting with all states commissioners of Education in order to agree on when schools can resume nationwide.

French Diplomat: France’s Mistral Warships Deal With Russia Legally in Force





The delivery of first Mistral-class helicopter carrier, built for Russia under the 2011 contract, has not been put off yet, as the statement made earlier on Wednesday reflected personal position of President Francois Hollande, a French diplomatic source said Wednesday.
